Unplanned bits of our day that went surprisingly well... We were working on counting... which didn't go over so well. So as I was contemplating what to do next, I got distracted by this magazine.
I am pretty sure it was my grandmother's. There are pretty basic and sweet ideas in there. He wanted to make the boat. I vetoed that after reading the instructions. But it did inspire this:
An abacus. I've never used one before. I've been wanting one. Had enough random stuff on hand to make my own. We did basic counting... but even that wasn't peaking his interest. But that's ok. Now it's made and ready for when he is ready. And I get to learn how to use it now myself. And the magazine inspired this:
Now this was fun. He already knew how to count to ten. L too, but I don't think she actually recognizes what they look like. And E got some practice counting backwards. And it was a game. He wants to play games all the time. It was also good for working on coordination. Well after that we practiced using scissors. E cut out shapes for the first time. And then we made google eye monsters. L couldn't get her scissors to work as well. So she ripped and glued eyes on too. She really enjoyed this and did surprisingly well with using bottle glue. And then in our paper bin I found a Montessori catalogue and starting browsing through it looking for ideas. I've always liked Montessori stuff and ideas but I don't want to pay for it. Well that browsing led to this:
We had to set a timer so they could take turns. I didn't have enough dirty dishes for them. "Mom, do you have more dishes?" It's so fun... so fun to create spaces for them to do things on their own. L did dishes tonight after supper even. And the only reason why this whole afternoon went well was because this little gal took a super long nap.
These kinds of days come only once in a while. Just wanted to share this one with you.
